This summer, one of the UK’s most popular seaside destinations, Bournemouth Beach, has rolled out a simple yet powerful solution to a problem every parent fears: children getting lost in the crowd.
Under the
KidZone scheme, families can pick up free wristbands from seafront offices and RNLI lifeguard towers. Parents simply write their phone number and location on the band, so if a child wanders off, lifeguards or beach staff can quickly reunite them with their family. Each zone has a
different colored wristband, making it easier to spot where a child belongs.
The scheme, which also covers Poole and Christchurch until September 1, has already proven its value. Since its launch in 2007, more than one million wristbands have been distributed, reuniting over 3,200 children with their families. RNLI lifeguard Kester Sheppard explains:
“We know how easy it is for young children to become separated from their families while on a day out at the seaside. These wristbands allow us to reunite worried parents or carers with their little ones quickly and ensure that everyone makes it home safely and happily.”
Parents are equally supportive. One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor:
“Our grandchildren were given waterproof wristbands with our phone number in case they got lost – we thought this was a brilliant idea as the beach was packed with people.”
Why Wristbands Matter for Child Safety
The Bournemouth initiative highlights something every parent knows deep down: no matter how careful you are, children can get lost in crowded places. Wristbands are a simple, effective safeguard that offers peace of mind.
- Quick identification: Contact details on the band help staff or passers-by reunite lost children with parents faster, reducing panic and search times.
- Reassurance for kids: Wearing a wristband tells children that help is always within reach, easing their fear if they are separated.
- Versatile protection: From beaches to theme parks, shopping malls, museums, and music festivals – wristbands are a practical tool for any busy environment.
